First death in the run-up to the Western and Southern Provincial Council polls was reported from Dompe yesterday. A UNP supporter died after being assaulted allegedly by a UPFA activist.
The victim, O. K. Piyasena (50) was pasting posters of UNP Gampaha District candidate Harshana Rajakaruna at Kimbulwala in the Dompe police area when a UPFA supporter got into an argument with him and hit him with bare hands causing him to fall on the ground.
Piyasena died on admission to Dompe hospital.
Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that according to preliminary investigations the suspect assaulted the victim and the post mortem report was pending.
The police spokesman said that there were 100 election related complaints received by the police stations in six districts going to the polls. SSP Rohana said that 96 persons had been arrested.
