Senior Congress leader and Union Shipping Minister G.K. Vasan asserted that his party was the only political organisation that has been working for the welfare of the Sri Lankan Tamils. Other parties have only been talking about their suffering, but have hardly done anything for their welfare, he said here on Friday.
Campaigning for the Congress candidate for Salem constituency Mohan Kumaramangalam, Mr. Vasan defended India abstaining from voting on the resolution against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council, saying that it was done in the interests of the Tamils living in Sri Lanka.
“The Union government is taking various measures for the rehabilitation of the Tamils in that country. They would have been affected if India had voted in favour of the resolution. Other parties here (Tamil Nadu) are carrying on a false propaganda against the Congress on this issue,” he said. Mr. Vasan also accused Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa of making a false claim that India supported the Sri Lankan army in the war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
On the Congress going it alone in Tamil Nadu in the Lok Sabha elections, he said the party was getting overwhelming response from the voters during the campaign.
