Legal Correspondent The Centre on Thursday asserted in the Supreme Court that the assassination of the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, in 1991 was a very serious and heinous crime which could not be forgotten so easily or brushed aside.
Pakistan is opposed to country specific resolutions in principle. This is because such resolutions are ineffective and counter-productive. Consent of the country concerned is imperative for tangible results to promote and protect human rights.
B Kolappan DMK leader M. Karunanidhi on Friday described India’s decision to abstain from voting on the US-backed resolution in Geneva against Sri Lanka for its alleged human rights violations as “a mother strangling her own child”.
Indian envoy Dilip Sinha said India does not support the operative para 10 OF the resolution which asks for an international inquiry but encourages Sri Lanka to implement the recommendations of an internal inquiry’s report and findings.
It is significant that India which supported the U.S. proposals against Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council on the two previous occasions remained absent from voting in the election held on Thursday (March 26). India said that the US proposal was not inconsistent with the UNHRC principles.
The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) opposed India for its decision to abstain from the US sponsored resolution in UNHRC which was passed today (27).
